The Challenge

The 18-story BB&T office tower has been an iconic fixture of the downtown Asheville skyline for 50 years. Located in the heart of downtown, opposite Pack Square, the building was designed in the modern style of famous architect Mies van der Rohe. However, it was in need of an updated renovation. How do you transform an outdated, but legendary structure into a beautiful, functional, architectural gem?

The Results

As with every investment McKibbon makes, the purchase of the BB&T building in Asheville was made with the city’s growth and development in mind. McKibbon is partnering with Starwood Hotels & Resorts and Asheville’s Tower Properties to transform this landmark into a unique mixed-use development consisting of commercial and residential condominiums, retail space, and a hotel unlike any other in the city.

In the true independent spirit of Asheville, there will be nothing “ordinary” about this property. The independent hotel — called Hotel Arras — will be part of the recently launched Tribute Portfolio, a collection of upscale, four-star properties that are individually designed and operated. Upper-floor guests and residents will be treated to 360-degree vistas of the surrounding mountains and the city lights below. A new three-level parking deck will be constructed on the rear of the property — a much-needed parking solution that will serve as a vehicular entry for the hotel and residential condominium, valet parking staging, and parking for the residential units. The remaining hotel parking needs will be accommodated in the new deck that McKibbon is building across the street in conjunction with the AC Hotel. The ground floor will be devoted to hotel public spaces designed for locals and visitors alike, and it will include a bar with outdoor seating and a sizable retail/restaurant space for lease. Corporate clients and event planners will find more than 5,000 square feet of meeting and event space.

The McKibbon team is working closely with design and architecture professionals to ensure the heart and soul of this landmark remains intact for generations to come. In keeping with McKibbon’s commitment to empowering communities and its employees, all full-time team members will earn a living wage.
